Organic vs Bamboo Baby Clothes — What's the Difference and Which is Better?

The softest clothing around

As Seen With Molly-Mae

If you have spent any time looking at baby clothing, you have encountered both organic cotton and bamboo fabric — often presented as equally virtuous, equally good for babies, and essentially interchangeable. They are not. This guide explains what each fabric actually is, what each does, how they differ, and which situations call for which.

What is Organic Cotton?

Organic cotton is cotton grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms. It is processed without chlorine bleaches, formaldehyde finishes, or other chemical treatments that conventional cotton routinely uses.

The result is a fabric that is naturally breathable, durable, and free from the chemical residues that can irritate sensitive baby skin. Babies wearing organic cotton are not exposed to the approximately 77 million pounds of pesticides applied to conventional cotton crops in the US alone each year — none of which are fully removed by washing.

GOTS certification — the Global Organic Textile Standard — is the benchmark that matters most when buying organic cotton baby clothing. GOTS certification covers not just the cotton growing process but the entire supply chain, including dyeing, finishing, and manufacturing. A GOTS certified garment is organic throughout — not just in the field, but all the way to the finished product.

At Cozy Crew Club, our organic cotton is GOTS certified throughout. When we say organic, we mean the highest standard of organic, verified independently at every stage of production.

What is Bamboo Fabric?

Bamboo fabric is made from the pulp of bamboo grass, processed into fibres and then into textile. Bamboo as a plant is one of the most sustainable crops on earth — it grows faster than almost any other plant, requires no pesticides or herbicides, needs minimal water, and regenerates from its roots without replanting.

The fabric that results from bamboo processing is exceptionally soft — often described as having a texture similar to cashmere or silk — naturally hypoallergenic, and has natural antibacterial properties that reduce odour and bacterial growth.

The key qualification: the environmental credentials of bamboo fabric depend significantly on the processing method. Bamboo viscose (the most common form) requires chemical processing that, if not handled responsibly, reduces the environmental benefit of the raw material. Bamboo lyocell uses a closed-loop process that is significantly more environmentally responsible.

Which is Better for Eczema and Sensitive Skin?

Both organic cotton and bamboo are significantly better for sensitive and eczema-prone skin than conventional fabrics — but they address the problem in slightly different ways.

Organic cotton is better for sensitive skin primarily because of what it doesn't contain. Conventional cotton is processed with formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, synthetic dyes, and other chemical treatments that can trigger reactions in sensitive skin. Organic cotton uses none of these. For babies whose skin reacts to chemical residues in fabric, the switch to organic cotton often produces immediate and significant improvement.

Bamboo is better for sensitive skin because of what it does contain — or more precisely, because of how it naturally behaves. Bamboo fabric has natural antibacterial properties that prevent the bacterial growth that can worsen eczema. It is also naturally temperature-regulating, reducing the overheating that triggers eczema flares. And it is one of the softest fabrics available, reducing the physical irritation that rough or stiff fabrics cause.

For babies with eczema or very sensitive skin, many parents find bamboo particularly effective for sleepwear specifically — because the temperature-regulating properties and softness are most beneficial during the long hours of sleep.

Which is Better for Sleep?

Bamboo wins this category clearly. Its temperature-regulating properties — keeping babies cooler when it's warm and warmer when it's cool — make it ideal for sleepwear, where maintaining a consistent, safe sleeping temperature is critical. Our bamboo and organic cotton blend pyjamas at Cozy Crew Club combine the best of both fabrics for exactly this reason.

Which is More Durable?

Organic cotton wins this category. Properly cared for, high-quality organic cotton garments last through multiple children, hundreds of washes, and years of regular use. The fibres are strong and become softer with wear rather than breaking down.

Bamboo fabric, while beautiful, is more delicate and benefits from gentler washing — cool temperatures, no tumble drying, no harsh wringing. Parents who follow care instructions carefully find bamboo garments last well. Parents who treat them like conventional cotton sometimes find they don't last as long.

Which is Better for the Environment?

This is more nuanced than most comparisons acknowledge.

Organic cotton has clear environmental advantages over conventional cotton — no synthetic pesticides, no GMOs, less water use, no harmful chemical processing. It is one of the most environmentally responsible fabric choices available.

Bamboo as a plant is remarkably sustainable — it grows faster than almost any other crop, requires no pesticides, and stores carbon effectively. The qualification is in the processing: bamboo viscose requires chemical processing that partially offsets the raw material's environmental advantages. Bamboo lyocell is the most responsible form.

Both organic cotton and responsibly processed bamboo are significantly better environmental choices than conventional cotton or synthetic fabrics like polyester.

Which Does Cozy Crew Club Use?

We use both — choosing the right fabric for each product based on what that specific product needs to do.

Our sleepsuits, bodysuits, and tracksuits are made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton — chosen for durability, breathability, and the reliable performance that everyday daywear and active use demand.

Our pyjama sets use a bamboo and organic cotton blend — chosen for the softness and temperature-regulating properties that make the most difference during sleep, combined with the durability and structure that organic cotton provides.

Both fabric approaches share the same commitment: no synthetic materials against your baby's skin, no chemical treatments that conventional fabrics use, and quality that improves with washing rather than deteriorating.

The Simple Verdict

Choose organic cotton for: daywear, outerwear, tracksuits, rompers, and anything that needs to be durable and withstand regular active use.

Choose bamboo or bamboo blends for: sleepwear, pyjamas, and anything worn against the skin for long periods, particularly for babies with eczema or temperature-regulation difficulties.

Choose Cozy Crew Club for both — because we have done the fabric thinking for you, matching the right material to each product, so every piece your baby wears is the best possible version of what it needs to be. 🐻
